Both Can Be True

July 27 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Both Can Be True

What if nothing is wrong with you?

For generations, women have inherited a story about what motherhood is supposed to feel like.

That becoming a mother comes naturally.

That you’ll instinctively know what to do.

That love should erase doubt.

That if you’re struggling, you’re somehow doing it wrong.

But what if those aren’t universal truths?

What if they’re simply stories we’ve been telling women?

On Monday, July 27, TEDxNashvilleWomen invites you to an evening of science, storytelling, and honest conversation that challenges many of our deepest assumptions about motherhood, identity, and what it means to become a parent.

Featuring

Kathryn L. Humphreys, Ph.D., Ed.M.

Developmental & Clinical Psychologist • Vanderbilt University

Dr. Humphreys is one of the leading researchers studying how adults become caregivers. Her groundbreaking work explores the maternal brain, early relationships, and one of the most overlooked questions in science:

Does motherhood really come naturally?

Her research suggests we may know far less than we think—and that caregiving may be something we learn rather than something we’re born knowing.

Jessica Guerrieri

Award-Winning Novelist • Author of Both Can Be True

Jessica Guerrieri writes about the emotional realities women often feel but rarely say aloud.

Her novel explores love, identity, expectation, and the complicated truths that can exist at the same time.

Following the conversation, Jessica will join attendees for a book signing.

Every attendee will receive a complimentary copy of Both Can Be True.

An Evening for Honest Conversation

Together, Kathryn and Jessica will explore questions like:

  • Why do so many women feel like they’re failing when they become mothers?
  • What does science actually know about the maternal brain?
  • How have stories shaped our expectations of womanhood?
  • Can you deeply love your child while mourning parts of the life you left behind?
  • How do we create more compassionate stories for the next generation?
